Lessons from Burning Man -Take it

I’m in Forza, my local coffee shop, across from me and about 5 tables down is a woman who is having a shitty day. She’s obviously in distress, I think she’s been stood up, she’s dividing her time between doing her best to short-circuit a cell phone by weeping into it and doing an excellent impersonation of the most miserable person in the world.
This is tricky. I feel so sorry for her. I know how she feels, who doesn’t? While everyone else is ignoring her, I can’t. So I slowly wander over, you want to approach this carefully, you don’t want to make her day worse – “Hey…. I’m guessing ….  you’re having a really shitty day…?”

“Yeah… I’m just waiting for a friend.”

She had been waiting for at least two hours nursing one coffee.

“Sure. I was just wondering if I could buy you a coffee or a pastry or something? Eating and drinking makes me feel better sometimes.”

She kindly laughed a little. “Oh no ..thanks. Thanks, really. People don’t do that these days.”

“I do,” I said, smiling. “Really I’d like to.”

“No. I couldn’t.”

“Ok … you really would be welcome you know.”

“No. Thanks though.”

“Hey, no worries”

She knew I wasnt going to bother her further… it was a no strings almost-random act of kindness. But she still said no. Why did she say no?

One of the big lessons learned at Burning Man was how to accept friendly gestures of help and gifts with good grace. There’s no need to reciprocate. Refusing to accept a gift denies both people pleasure… and who the hell wants to do that?

Her friend never came… and I know she could have used the coffee… oh well.

New Ideas

Came up with a new idea for some FB marketing – bloody brilliant! Meeting with Amy Pierce on Friday to hash out details.
There are some differences of opinion so let’s hope it’s not a bloodbath.
Nah she’ll be right. Besides I’m a lot bigger than she is and I have a vicious right hook.

Drawing the line

I have a friend, or perhaps I should more properly say, I did have a friend, whose political views were diametrically opposed to my own . I enjoyed her company and liked her very much… hence we were friends – d’oh! Recently I decided I had to sever our relationship. It was not an easy thing to do, but it was time to draw a line in the sand. There are very few areas of disagreement that would drive me to take such a drastic step, but they are vitally important to me. They are fundamental beliefs to me, that make up a part of who I am.

She is a very outspoken right-wing person and in hindsight I would have to say she is a bigoted racist. She doesn’t sound too nice, too bright or too much fun does she? Truth is, she was terrific company and lots of fun. Anyway, I digress; the breaking point came when I asked her if she personally agreed with the calls for Wikileaks’ Julian Assange’s death, as expressed on the website www.peopleokwithmurderingassange.com. She replied that she agreed with capital punishment and suspected I did not (she was right) and that she thought Assange was the same as “terrorist scum who should be shot on sight”. This was not just an opinion that she personally held, she had been very vocal about it. I told her I thought that her call for a man’s death was disgusting, and that it made her no better than a terrorist. It is one thing to call for a man’s trial and quite another to call for his death. I told her that we could no longer be friends. If she feels like me she will be saddened by the loss of our friendship; but maybe she won’t care at all. What I know is that it is wrong to even listen to talk that is vitriolic and hate-ridden or to lend it any credence whatever.

Political argument is fine, differences of opinion are normal and healthy in relationships of all types, but people who are racist or espouse values or actions based on hate don’t belong in my life, nor do people who are intolerant or divisive. In my youth I was guilty of putting up with that kind of behavior,  requesting of certain friends that they not talk about those subjects, effectively sweeping our differences under the carpet;  in doing so becoming quietly complicit.

No more. Those days are gone. I will still have friends with whom I disagree politically, but I’ve finally drawn the line regarding which issues and attitudes I will accept as disparities and what constitutes  much greater and insurmountable differences. Really this is about betrayal and compromise; how much can one compromise? and how much is one prepared to betray one’s values; oneself, in the name of friendship?

The future is Clear? Don’t think so.

Confession time . For about a year Ive been relying on my neighbour’s wireless internet – lovely folks that they are. For everyone outside the US – this is not such a bad thing, in the US you pay for speed NOT amount used which has no limit – so I really haven’t been doing anything terribly bad. The only reason I can think of for password protecting wireless in the US, is fear of being hacked, which I suppose, is quite reason enough.

Anyway before leaving for Australia I had organized to re-connect with a WISP called Clear (formerly known as Clearwire). I had arranged the re-connection for a planned date, confirmed the re-connection fee, the method of payment etc… I pretty much had it covered.

So on the date planned I contacted them (I should point out here that when Clear has blocked your internet access, it blocks everything except the Clear website) via their website and used the chat client option you’ll see on the upper right corner of their homepage. Well none of the things we had covered months ago were taken care of;  our conversation hadn’t even been included in their CRM.  This was not good.  So, I spent 40 minutes negotiating a new re-connection fee (they had added a third to our agreed upon figure) then requested to pay by VISA . No problem, right? Wrong. The VISA I needed to use was held with an Australian bank. Clear’s system is set up to accept verification by zipcode – which in Australia is 4 numbers and in the US is 5 numbers. They wouldn’t accept my VISA. Preposterous! Anyone who has ever worked for a small store can tell you each merchant has a merchant number and a phone contact to a VISA rep. -  to sort out problems just like this one. Nope. Clear can’t/won’t do it.

This being the case I was left with no choice but to pay cash at an authorized Clear dealer, so I head to my nearest, which is in The Tacoma Mall. Of course they’ll take cash.  Nope, they don’t take cash anymore. No problem I’ll use the VISA. No, they use the same system as they do online. So there is no way of paying Clear – they don’t seem too keen to have any customers! The dealer in Tacoma Mall suggests I go to B&I Market in Lakewood where there is a dealer who does take cash. Great. I’m off. I go to the dealer, pay cash,  give them my account details, get a written receipt and leave. When I return home I find that access to the internet is still blocked. So i go onto their website again, start the chat client and talk with a rep who tells me that a) the dealer probably can’t access my account as it has been cancelled and b) even if he could access my account (which he can’t) it would take 24-48 hours to post – clearing the way for web access. I was incensed. What could they mean? They never told me anything about this before I paid! I paid cash! Well that started a four day battle during which I had to walk for 3 miles a day to access the internet. I got restricted internet for 4 days yesterday – so its still not resolved! Apparently there is so much disillusionment and disatisfaction surrounding Clear from both customers and staff that it has spawned sites like this – clearwiresucks.com

Highlights  from the four days worth of conversations I had with various Clear reps, supervisors and managers is copied below :

Hello Simon. Please wait while we find a CLEAR specialist to help you.
Your question is: I need to communicate with Daphne Funches in Financial Services but this and email are the only methods of communication I have at my disposal

You have been connected to Cory Jeakins.

Cory Jeakins:  Hi Simon! I’ll be happy to help you today!

Simon:  (redacted) My phone number for account recognition

Simon:  (redacted) My password – No you cant have that either.

Cory Jeakins:  Thank you! I’d also like to mention that we’ve added many time saving features to our phone system and to our website to improve your experience. For example, when you go to Clear.com, there’s now a dedicated support page with lots of information to help answer basic questions and technical issues. We’ll keep you notified as we continue to enhance our systems. Look for our monthly newsletter for more details.

Simon:  have you my account Cory?

Cory Jeakins:  Yes, I do have your account pulled up.

Simon:  ok

Simon:  i need to communicate with Daphne Funches

Cory Jeakins:  I do apologize Simon, the only way to contact finances is by calling in.

Simon:  I use voip …and clear wont support voip

Simon:  at least where i live

Simon:  can you communicate with her?

Cory Jeakins:  I am seeing that you are eligible for Voip phone service through Clear Simon.

Simon:  lmao

Cory Jeakins:  I am sorry, I am not able to make outbound phone calls, you will need to call in to contact Daphne Funches.

Simon:  i cant even use skype using my existing clear service

Simon:  then put me through to accounts or someone who can make internal communications please

Simon:  cory?

Cory Jeakins:  I am sorry Simon, you will need to call in using a phone to contact finances.

Cory Jeakins:  Only customer care, tech support and sales are available here in webchat.

Simon:  there has to be some form of internal communications within your company?

Cory Jeakins:  What is the issue regarding Simon? I may be able to assist you.

Simon: I need to deal with Daphne Funches …surely someone there can communicate with her?

Simon:  I would reply to the email she sent me

Simon:  but it specifies I shouldn’t do that

Cory Jeakins:  How did you contact Daphne Funches?

Simon:  She contacted me via an email…. that i cant reply to

Simon:  her email address would be fine

Simon:  or an email in financial services

Cory Jeakins:  Ok, i am looking in the notes and I do see that you were sent an email. I do apologize, to contact finances, you will need to call in to (888)888-3113.

Simon:  i would …but my only way to call is via voip…and clear isnt consistent enough ….calls keep dropping out

Simon:  and you cant use the keypad anyhow …its not recognized

Simon:  Please get me an email address or let Daphne know it is the only way I can communicate

Cory Jeakins:  I will place a note on the account due to that there is not an email offered to contact finance. A phone call will need to be placed to finances to contact that department.

Simon:  Cory I need someone to make Daphne aware that my only form of communication is via email ..or chat i guess … hoping that she will stumble into my account notes and find your message isn’t very likely is it?

Simon:  I need someone who can do this for me … she does work for your company right?

Cory Jeakins:  I am sorry Simon, I am not able to verify that your account will be seen by Daphne. The only way to contacting finance is to call in. I wish I could do more for you.

Simon: I would think that by definition customer service would every now and then need to be in communication with another department in order to… well… service a customers needs …are you saying that’s not possible with clear?

Simon:  What does customer service do exactly?

Simon:  All that I’ve really experienced so far is upselling and sales. Are you secretly the sales department?

Cory Jeakins:  Customer care assist with questions about the service, equipment, we do help to the best of our ability, if we are not able to resolve the issue then we do direct the customer to contact the appropriate department.

Simon:  Go on you can tell me

Cory Jeakins:  I am not the sales department Simon. To contact sales here in webchat, I would need to transfer you.

Simon:  …but you cant contact that department on the customers behalf?

Simon:  lmao

Simon:  Brilliant!

Simon:  oh dear …we’re not getting very far are we Cory?

Cory Jeakins:  I am sorry, for further assistance with your issue, you will need to call in, in order to talk with the finance department. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Simon:  btw i may be interested in that voip offer …can i do that through you

Cory Jeakins:  If you would like and are interested in adding Voip to your account, I can see if a sales agent is available to assist you?

Simon:  I was kidding Cory

Cory Jeakins:  I am sorry Simon.

Simon:  im very appreciative though mate … this will make great reading

Simon:  have a good one

Cory Jeakins:  Is there anything else I can assist you with today by chance?

Simon:  No mate…. you’ve done well… thanks

Cory Jeakins:  Thank you for chatting with me today! If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us; we are available in live WebChat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Have a great day Simon!

Plagiarism

I don’t know whether I should be happy or flattered or incensed. Nearly four years ago I began writing episodes of (the then untitled) The Bloke Show. I was inspired by a series on ABC television in Australia called Andrew’s Guide to Being a Man.  Two friends of mine starred in “Andrew’s Guide” – Andrew Booth and Pete Marshall I watched a couple of episodes got the gist , decided I wanted to write an episode, sent it to the producers, who loved it, the script was accepted  and I was in the process of writing more when the series was cancelled before my episode was shot.

Andrew Booth and Pete Marshall from Andrews Guide to Being a Man

I liked the basic concept of Andrew’s Guide (two guys giving advice to other guys) and The Man Show (the two guys concept and its sketch format – otherwise I found The Man Show sexist and frankly – unfunny)… so I developed new characters, let the concept take off in a different direction and  wrote much longer scripts to allow for  more well rounded character and story  development. I sent these scripts to maybe five people at that time and told maybe ten others of the concept and gave them the part of the script that is featured in the offending clip, as an example of the direction in which the show was heading . The feedback I received was mixed, everything from “love it” to effectively saying “its crass” – which, I may add,  at times it unabashedly is – Im not steering away from it – in fact I love its crassness.

I’m aware that there are millions and millions of ideas out there and that a duplicate idea is completely within the bounds of possibility, however, this clip (which I Stumbled Upon) despite having an altered context and that it isn’t exactly as I wrote it,  is similar enough (very, very similar) to the scene I wrote to arouse more than a little suspicion.  The caption at the beginning which reads “Tacoma, Washington” – now takes on a dark overtone and is a little obvious and a little insulting – Tacoma is where I live! – it has pushed it way past the point of coincidence in my mind.

The good news – the clip has received over one million views which validates the humour of the concept – hooray! The clip has okay production values on the whole -certainly good enough for what I was envisioning anyhow. But I hate the graphics.

The bad news – the clip is very poorly directed,it isnt funny and it bloody well should be! Where’s the sense of the ridiculous (well, apart from the obvious)? Where’s the tongue in cheek? Where’s the self mockery? The director certainly does not understand of the idea of a fully explored set-up.  The audience reaction to “the arrival” is horribly projected – we hear the reaction before we see the subject! Please people! It should have worked the other way ie stunned silence followed by amazed and enthusiastic response. The humour is in the set-up and the pause folks! We are the audience – let us do the discovering and let us find joy in being right about the response – how clever we are!

The other thing that pisses me off is that (believe it or not) I developed the idea a lot further than this. Will I run into problems, as I haven’t  been able to protect my own work yet?Maybe; maybe not, but I shouldn’t have to be concerned about that at all.

I am trying to contact the youtube uploader – I have a few questions. I don’t object to it being filmed per se, its more that they’ve cramped my style, stolen my idea and possibly made it difficult for me to take this further that bugs me.

And far more damaging to me is  this: although I’m not  so naive  to believe that people don’t steal each other’s ideas or work –  I really didn’t think it would happen to me, nor so brazenly. I’m just getting over my last legal battle with an A-hole who exploited me, now I have to deal with more of the same. I like having faith in people, I like that I trust and would rather see the best in people by choice. Now, I just don’t know who to trust anymore. It’s beginning to feel as though nobody is trustworthy and that kind of loss of faith is really a tragedy.

I won’t be seeking feedback on my scripts anymore, I’ll simply have to have faith in my own judgement, which is fine, I’m loathe to lose the feedback it’s a really valuable commodity, it’s not easy to find people in whose judgement you trust.

Anyone who can help me with International copyright issues would be much appreciated here .
