Day thirty-two – yeah I counted back

What a remarkable day. To start the day I contacted Barney Burman (2010 Oscar Winner Make-up for Star Trek)asking for help with TBS, if he might have any suggestions where we could find someone who could help us with the make-up for a particularly challenging webisode I have written. Honestly, I never expected a reply at all, the man won the Oscar just four days ago! But lo and behold! early this afternoon a reply. There are some very generous people in this industry – no doubt about it.

I’m contacting Eric Bana next …Im searching for a lead… thought I’d continue in the Star Trek mode.

We had our first personnel losses the other day ..the gossip I was talking about… Makayla (our stunningly gorgeous-in-every-way) production manager is no longer seeing Ethan – one of our would-be camera operators. I never met Ethan – just as well really, but this poses a whole new set of potential difficulties for the production. I have no doubt this will herald the arrival of many suitors to Makayla’s doorstep, if they even try to interrupt the breakneck pace of the growth of this project I swear I will beat the buggers off with a stick. I’m not worried about Makayla who is a trooper and a consumate pro…but boys will be boys and it wasnt that long ago; really it wasn’t , that I was chasing girls myself. I do remember and I will have a large stick at the ready.

It appears as though we may have some leads into securing the services of a web-designer at last , so this website and blog can start working for us and should start looking half-way decent. Fingers crossed.

Bj and I talked about some t-shirt ideas and he assures me that we can start selling within a couple of days, so that’s cool.

Here comes a rant – be warned!

On a personal note amidst all of this ..my youngest got kicked out of daycare for good , without warning just a “please don’t bring him back” . He is such a happy kid , he is prone to wild tantrums but nothing my ex and I couldn’t stop in less than two minutes. He never hurt another child or staff member at the daycare This is without a doubt a failure of the daycare’s. I was furious; it is inexcusable to, without warning, leave a young boy without a daycare, it is a huge part of his daily routine. They also left us, the parents, at a loose end too (mid-week and all) without so much as a meeting expressing that this was an issue that needed to be addressed. Not even a phone call. The owner of the daycare made the decision – she doesn’t even live in the state, she has nothing to do with the day-to-day running of the daycare and I have never even met her, she is just visiting – so she effectively undermined the authority and decision making abilities of her staff as well.

So my ex and I are now searching frantically for a new daycare and have each had to take a day off to look after our son in the interim period.

I will be making a home-made (using the inbuilt camera and mic in my Mac) YouTube posting about this debacle. I’ve never made a complaint video or a publicly accessible complaint of any nature…but this is beyond the pale. If you’re curious to see my mug, the name of the daycare is Raggedy Ann and Andy . I’ll post the video in the next day or two. My YouTube username is Kineticed – (dont ask). My goodness gracious they’ll be feeling raggedy once Im done with this!

Okay rant over.

How time flies! It’s 12:48am here and Im catching up with Bj soon to continue writing. When will I have normal hours again? Please God let it be soon… nah I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Catch up with you tomorrow peoples.

Introducing Mr. Kalms…and the wombat

The re-birth of a writer …todays post from my co-writer BJ Kalms – as always un-edited and uncensored.
For those awaiting the juicy goss I promised ..I’m still working on it…promise.

Return of the Blogging Dead.

After leaving the comedy life for a much more normal set of circumstances I let the idea of being an artist slip under the rug. The bump was still there though, like an old wombat that had crawled in and died under the carpet, it still exuded the smell of humour, jocularity and laughter. And constantly tripping on said wombat started to get on me, my wife’s and in fact my whole family’s nerves. So I moved the poor little bugger to the very back of my mind and buried it with a rather dodgy looking shovel in my mental back lot where it couldn’t get in the way of normal thoughts and life.

And then there was peace. I got a “boring” job and stopped looking at everything with a joking eye, I started to save money, which constantly amazed my wife and bank manager, and I started to get up when it was morning and go to bed before it was morning too. I was happy in an average kind of way; I went back to college and studied computers and animation in hopes of keeping abreast of today’s technology, and acquiring more skills to keep me…well, normal. I helped my wife to and from her important work in the disability field, I even helped my 91 year old father-in-law maintain his lifestyle and home in the comfortable fashion he deserved.

After acquiring and inevitably leaving a plethora of traditional and lowly paid job excursions I started work in the industrial sector. I remember my first job was pulling fridges from containers, along with other ridiculously heavy objects of white goodness. This was discipline, this was an income, this was exercise, and this was so hard I constantly wondered whether I had done the right thing by burying the old wombat of funniness in my mental back yard. I had to though, it was not getting used, not bringing in any cash, and was starting to stink up the place as it naturally decayed from light hearted perspective to a stale sarcastic stench. I persevered with the store man jobs, shifting from several large to small companies, and all the time mourning the loss of the old mirth ridden marsupial that had brought myself and a few others joy and laughter. Life was good, even if it meant foregoing my fantasies and treating the world with serious intent. The old comedy wombat was finally dead and buried, and my mourning days were over…or so I thought.

One night (I’d like to think it was dark and stormy) I got an e-mail from my old mate Simon about an idea he had. I hadn’t seen nor heard from him for over a decade and he was keen to use my skills in comedy scripting and digital art to help create a webisode internet thingamy thing he called The Bloke Show. I was curious and a little bored and I made the fatal mistake of reading the synopsis, I was hooked, it could actually work, and before I knew it the old wombat was back!

The decaying marsupial had clawed its way out of its psychological grave and ripped through my mental back door quicker than flies on poop. It staggered into my brain’s living room and with a giggling howl it announced its inevitable return…newly undead, stinking of discarded gags and pissed off at its forced burial, it fixed me with a baleful stare… and it was then I knew I had no choice… I had to sign up, I had to help my old buddy, and I had to be the wielder of the wombat again. Only we can save mankind, and if only I could imagine a better class of air freshener.

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode, same wombat time, same wombat blog!

Day God only knows what

Ummm well so much for daily posts…let me explain. After writing Day One and Two I discovered that the posts weren’t being published ..a glitch somewhere I’m sure, I did explain I was technically challenged, our IT guru Harold was away at a conference in San Francisco… and well, we were so busy with other matters this got put on the back-burner. So now its time to catch up, this is all from memory so the time frame may be a bit out.

On the search for talent I stumbled across Mike Ashby who I contacted through FB . Mike responded immediately and I’ve just finished talking with him on the phone , Mike does a lot of editing for movie trailers. What a great bloke! He’d become a fan of our FB page read about the project and even bothered to find this blog. From our first conversation he was enthusiastic and very helpful, I get the pleasure of meeting him Saturday night.

What is certain is that the process of getting us up and running is going to take longer than expected, there has been no loss of enthusiasm – if anything its building, its simply a longer process than Im used to with theatre productions and involves a lot more people.

Makayla Lee (our production manager) and I attended another meetup that featured talks by local film makers two nights ago. One of the film makers was Dan Gildark who directed Cthulhu . We spoke with him briefly after the meeting exchanged business cards and we are going to meet with him in the near future, his newest project is also in producing/directing for the web market so Im sure he’ll have some great information for us, he was very approachable and helpful too. Is the whole industry like this? Somehow I doubt it, but while we are having nothing but positive experiences, we’re taking it.

As Bj and I are writing we are becoming much more adventurous both in terms of style and scope. This is presenting us with new challenges. What started as a one location shoot is developing into a many location shoot and I’m sure we’re giving Makayla a headache; if not a heart attack. In terms of style – I was writing 15-20 minute webisodes, and it has been pointed out to me, in no uncertain terms, that this is a little long for the web market so we are scaling them back to 10 minutes each , thankfully due to the format of the production re-writes shouldn’t be too difficult – so that’s cool.

More friends are posting to the FB page with some great web-found material – thanks to Shannon Buchester and Blokie Bloke especially.

Thanks also goes to Crystal Komenda and Barbara Brkich who independently really boosted our fan numbers through their networking efforts . Thanks ladies.

My apologies to all for my appalling English grammar and sentence construction, but I guess so long as you can make sense out of it you’ll find it in your hearts to forgive me. I sure hope so otherwise I’m stuffed.

Bj and I have discussed producing promotional t-shirts. I love our ideas so watch out for some super cool and funny t-shirts we will have on sale through both the website and the FB page .

I promised this blog would be uncensored on my behalf ..and so it will, but I might have some juicy goss from someone else for your voracious appetites in tomorrows post. But as I am a gentleman I will need to ask permission to divulge all… no promises now! But between you and me I’m hopeful.

So til tomorrow I guess I’ll call it a night …have a good one!

Day one

Well I guess this is writing a blog…I’m making this as personal as possible as well as professional of course, Ive found the journeys that I have read that are personal, warts and all accounts, have been the most interesting to me , so I hope it is for you. There will be no intentional censorship of ocurences that affect/has affected the making of The Bloke Show. I don’t read blogs so what Im writing is simply a personal account of the process and my personal journey through its creation.

We have a lot to catch up on so this is likely to be a monster posting.

My name is Simon Houghton I am the guy who came up with The Bloke Show concept . I will be writing/co-writing the scripts and directing the production it is my first foray into film/video production as a director, my background is in theatre (acting and directing). I am a 43 year old single father of two amazing boys Baxter 5 and David 3 who are my reason,my purpose and my joy. I’m Australian and came to The States in 2001.I am also your The Bloke Show blogger. I will be uploading new posts daily.

Today is Superbowl Sunday 2010, I have no interest in Football but love baseball so maybe Im half-way converted into full American status – although immigrating as I did at the age of 35 I don’t think your heart ever leaves your homeland. I am listening to the game on the radio, so Im going to give you scoreboard updates as we go along.

At the two minute warning (first half)  its Colts 10 Saints 3. Im only listening cause Im an underdog guy … go Saints!!

I first had the idea of doing this show last year …I was living in Lynnwood, WA in the depths of a horrible and seemingly endless depression of which, as is common when in the midst of depression, I was unaware. Without going into detail, life had not only been unkind to me, it had been downright brutal, as it has for many Americans… and frankly, it has not been any better since …with two notable exceptions . I had an amazing girlfriend who did everything she could to save me from an unrelenting darkness, who enabled me to conceive of – this project – which is the second inspiring, astounding and enduring exception – and the reason I’m writing this blog. Thank you from the bottom of my heart – you know who you are.

I hadn’t worked in theatre  (my formal training) for nearly six years, and not professionally for fourteen years.  Fourteen years. When the love of my life had to leave  me,  I discovered that I had left the other love of my life fourteen years ago. It was high time we rekindled our love affair.

When one door closes another opens.

Only two months ago I took to further developing this project with a renewed vigor and passion, with a drive I haven’t felt for a long time . In between long and productive writing periods I’ve spent my time going to the gym  and renewing friendships I had neglected for nearly twenty years. Good theatre friends in Australia,  I managed to contact again through facebook. My  closest friends from my youth greeted me as though not a day had passed since we last spoke, I am moved thinking about it even now. One of those friends  is now the co-writer of The Bloke Show, Bj Kalms. Another friend, Ty Noonan  ( for Australians – of the band George fame) has  agreed to write the shows theme song .I am truly a fortunate man.

As time passed my vision and scope for this project grew, I believed that if this project has brought life back to me maybe it could do so for others.

Superbowl update :Half-time (Hartley?) kicks a goal for The Saints yeah! Colts 10 Saints 6.

The Bloke Show was originally titled Blokes Forum USA (BFUSA) . I wanted to write a comedy  about two guys – common blue collar salt-of -the- earth guys who were simply old -fashioned ; just ordinary guys wanting to pass on their pearls of wisdom and great ideas to other men. A light hearted entertainment, a spoof of forum/advice shows in general. I imagined a project that was to be a small-scale comedy, produced by a few local guys who did film-making as a hobby, done on the cheap…for fun and hopefully; hopefully… we would find an audience.

At the Superbowl : The Who are singing “We wont get fooled again” and before that “Who are you? Who? Who? -Who? Who?”

Superbowl – Second half – The Saints kick-off and the underdog takes a huge risk – they kick short and come up with possession of the ball.

Im off to the gym  it closes at 7pm. So I guess it’ll all be over when I return.

Wow …yeah Saints!!! I watched most of  the second half as I cycled away. A victory of heart and self -belief .

Back to the task at hand. I had written three scripts, and needed to find people with common interests, drive and beliefs.Through my depression I had become reclusive (by nature Im an outgoing guy, many would say too outgoing). I had no close friends in The US.  The vision of the concept had really grown by now. I realized  through facebook that the world was really a very small place  and that great things could be achieved by many people who are geographically separated by huge distances. That a community need not be limited by location. So when I joined a meetup group, three weeks ago, that had an interest in Film production my pitch was to produce a web-vid comedy series that was unique in concept. We needed  a core group of skilled individuals ,the product should be as professional as possible , but that a large contribution would be made by a world-wide community. We would be seeking to involve as many people as we could through social networking sites (Facebook, twitter, MySpace) . The goal  – to produce a truly co-operative production  and in doing so we’d be able to promote  the show and the process of making the show in an attempt to make it viral , before the first installment was even uploaded. Something that ,to my knowledge,  had never been done before. Our true litmus test  then, would  be not  the first show, but the second , our audience would be those involved , and those who loved the show enough to follow us. So the first show needed to be GOOD. We needed to create a buzz and excitement about the new way collaborative art forms could be brought to fruition.I also told them two things – we had no budget… and I mean no budget and I also guaranteed them that this was a project that would be made. I believe that an idea; the belief in an idea  can move mountains. I hasten to add that I didn’t exactly express it to them like that…but they got the gist.

And so armed with three pages of a hastily rewritten script that I had typed at Kinkos that morning (my printer had died – and when I went to print out the full script at Kinkos I discovered  I had saved the script in an unrecognized format – Im a little technically challenged) I met Harold Perry and Makayla Lee , two extraordinary people who, on that very first night, committed to helping me make The Bloke Show.We sat down over a coffee discussed the project and decided we would move on together.

Enthusiasm is infectious.

Harold works at Microsoft but is a guy with many passions , originally he was a sound guy in Nashville. he also loves still photography and biking . He has also set-up this blog and has set up all the social networking sites – it must drive him nuts doing some of the stuff he does at work every day for us. He’s ace.Hes our ADR/Foley/post  guy.

Makayla is a young bright enthusiastic organized  and beautiful young lady. Straight out of school she is our production manager. She is so positive . It is a delight to work with her. I know she is as much driving this bus now as I am. She has roped in her boyfriend Ethan into the project – I know he works at a local tv station , but I havent had the pleasure of meeting him yet, he will be one of our camera guys as will a common friend of theirs – Miguel. Thanks goes to them both too.

Since then I have placed postings on some meetup boards here in Seattle and have two more willing group members Roger Wilson  asst./camera operator and Rajesh Kumar (role undefined as yet). Thanks guys and welcome aboard.

The Bloke Show three weeks after that first meetup meeting has formed a life of its own! Without any doubt its the most thrilling and fulfilling experience I have undertaken. I am meeting and have come in touch with amazingly talented people who are just lovely and fun to be with – people who share a common vision and our passion. Every night I get to laugh myself silly writing with Bj Kalms ( if we aren’t laughing at the stuff we are writing we can’t really expect our audience to!)

We are planning not only tasks we need to complete, but also social get-togethers and larger scale production meetings so we can all discuss different aspects of The Bloke Show that doesn’t necessarily directly involve us. It is stimulating, it is enjoyable …and wonderful. It is becoming clear that production-wise The Bloke Show will be everything we want it to be – a high quality, funny! , web-vid series.

It is a runaway train.

So in three short weeks we have amassed a core group, the beginnings of a brilliant crew , a co-writer, a composer, we have set up pages on FB, twitter and Myspace , secured our domain name and  set up our blog. We have a logo – Thnx Bj Kalms -again! and we have nearly 4 completed scripts.

We will be posting all of our needs in terms of skills and materials on the web-site so just reply to the post if you’d like to be involved and you’ll be communicating with the awesome Makayla!

Who we need  – talent – I’ll be hunting through theatres and comedy venues this week.

– A set designer (pro) – if you are community minded and want to join our mob let us know!

– A web designer (pro) – this is crucial to our success – we need you!

– a make-up person (pro) – one of the scripts is particularly challenging in this regard

– lighting /lighting (pro)

You can contact me directly at houghton.simon@gmail.com

We are on the hunt – and we WILL find you! Anyone interested in joining us – please do – we are loving this experience and we are sure you will too. I’ll speak to you guys tomorrow. I hope you’ve found the blog interesting. More tomorrow. Ciao.
